Situado en la ladera sur de la Isla de Jeju, Scissor House se levanta sobre una existente granja de mandarinas con vistas al Océano Pacífico. Jeju esta aproximadamente a 100 kilómetros al sur de la península coreana. Conocida por su paisaje tropical y los fuertes vientos, la brisa cálida de verano sopla desde el Pacífico hacia el norte por toda la faz de la Halla Mountain, el volcán central de la isla, y los vientos fríos de invierno soplan hacia el sur desde las latitudes superiores. Scissor House se orienta para aprovechar esas condiciones naturales, manteniendo gran parte de la finca de mandarinas existente. La pendiente del sitio se solventa con terrazas de 2 a 3 metros de muros de retención de piedra de basalto. En el jardín, pequeñas piedras y musgo encaran la entrada y la sala de estar principal y el patio, con vistas al Océano Pacífico. Las puertas correderas a lo largo del salón principal y zona de comedor pueden abrirse totalmente, exponiendo toda la casa al mar durante gran parte del año. El techo continuo se mantiene con un nivel poco elevado para proteger a la casa de los fuertes vientos. El techo es una sola losa de hormigón sin ningún tipo de impermeabilización o parapeto, lo que fácilmente podría ser dañado con cualquier viento o tifón. Durante el proceso de vaciado y curado, el techo fue allanado cada 2-3 horas durante toda la noche para permitir que la humedad existente aumentara y se formase un sello de un 8 a 10 milímetros de cemento que evitase futuras grietas y hacerlo así resistente al agua. Scissors House es capaz de mantener una pequeña huella ecológica mientras disfruta de la inmensa belleza de la Isla y del Océano Pacífico.
Located on the southern slope of Jeju Island, the Scissor House pivots up a previously existing tangerine farm overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Jeju is approximately 100 kilometers south of the Korean Peninsula. Known for its tropical landscape and strong winds, Warm summer breezes blow north from the Pacific over the entire face of Halla Mountain, the islands central volcano, and cool winter winds blow south from the upper latitudes. The scissor house is oriented to take advantage of these natural conditions while maintaining much of the existing tangerine farm. The slope of the site is terraced with 2 to 3 meter basalt stone retaining walls. The house scissors between one tier and another, stepping up and pivoting around the low basalt stone wall. A small stones and moss garden faces the entry and steps up to the main living space and courtyard, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Sliding doors along the main living and eating space can open the entire house to the ocean for much of the year. The continuous roof remains low and monolithic to allow the singular form protection from the strong winds moving over the house. The roof is a single slab of concrete without any waterproofing or parapet which might easily be damaged in a typhoon strength wind. During the pouring and curing process, the roof was re-troweled every 2-3 hours throughout the night to allow any existing moisture to rise and form an 8- 10 millimeter thick cement seal which will prevent future cracks and is completely water tight. The Scissor House is able to maintain a small ecological footprint while enjoying the immense beauty of the Island and the Pacific Ocean.
